Siberian tigers were once found throughout the Russian Far East, northern China, and the Korean peninsula, but are now primarily in the Russian Far East where about 95% of the entire population currently resides (8). Today, Amur tigers are found primarily in two areas in the Russian Far East, the primary population covers the Primosky and Khabarovski Krais provinces, and another small population resides on the Russia-China border and into northeast China.
Amur tiger range
The climate in these areas is less forgiving than those of other tigers, but to the benefit of Siberian tigers. Amur tigers have the largest home range of any tiger subspecies because the low prey densities require them to search over large areas to find food. To put it in perspective, the average territory size of Amur tigers ranges from 100-400 square km for females to 800-1000 square km for males (22). The World Wildlife Fund states that the Siberian tiger population "represents the largest unfragmented tiger population in the world" (18). These forests have the lowest human density of any tiger habitat, and the immense forests also allow tigers far more room to roam because Russia's timber industry is currently considerably smaller than that of many other countries, but it's steadily growing!
